North Beach has a treasure hiding in plain sight. Nancy Calef has been making work in this neighborhood for nearly 50 years, and if you haven't encountered her "Peoplescapes," you're missing something remarkable. Her paintings aren't flat. Literally — she sculpts figures in clay directly onto the canvas, so the work pushes out at you. A demonstration where the crowd becomes a single, breathing organism. Layers of found objects, symbolism, and humor woven into scenes that feel both absurd and completely inevitable. The social commentary is sharp but never joyless. The spiritual dimension is there too — a sense that these crowded, chaotic human moments are somehow sacred, worth documenting, worth taking seriously. Her work asks: what does it mean to share a world with all these people? She's been in the permanent collection at the Beat Museum. She's shown at the De Young, Arc Gallery, Live Worms, and internationally. She's a North Beach original in the truest sense.
